Founded in 1896 as a branch to the British Royal Mint, Perth Mint today is one of the largest minting plants globally, owned by the Western Australian government. Manufacturer of the iconic ‘Kangaroo’ gold and silver investment coins, Perth Mint also produce a popular lunar series and a range of sought-after collector coins.
Launched in 2014, the Wedge-tailed Eagle series portrays images of Australia’s largest bird of prey by leading US coin engraver John M. Mercanti. With its distinctive wedge-shaped tail, the huge raptor is an icon of our sun-drenched skies. An impressive wingspan of up to 2.5 metres allows it to fly tirelessly for many hours at altitudes of up to 2,000 metres.
DESIGN:
The coin depicts a wedge-tailed eagle soaring on a background featuring geometrically arranged elements that suggest a sunburst. The design incorporates the inscriptions ‘AUSTRALIAN WEDGE-TAILED EAGLE’ and ‘10TH ANNIVERSARY’. Also included on the reverse is the coin’s year-date and a ‘P125’ mintmark signifying The Perth Mint’s 125th anniversary.
The obverse depicts the Dan Thorne effigy of His Majesty King Charles III, and the monetary denomination. A reminder of the original design, it includes a privy mark depicting a wedge-tailed eagle about to land on the branch of a dead tree.
PRESENTATION:
Accompanied by a numbered certificate of authenticity, the coin is housed in a grey leatherette presentation case and themed shipper.
