The ‘Original Maker’, striking coins since 886, The Royal Mint are the world’s leading export mint for both currency and bullion. The Britannia coin, in both gold and silver, has become a much loved investment coin globally. Additionally, collector coins from the Royal Mint have sometimes increased in value by many times, and are seen as a solid investment choice.
The Coronation Sovereign commemorates the historic crowning of His Majesty King Charles III at Westminster Abbey. Officially signifying the dawn of the new royal era for the United Kingdom, the event took place on Saturday, 6 May 2023. The King is the latest in a long line of monarchs to appear on The Sovereign, whilst this is only the second issue of the coin to bear a portrait of His Majesty.
The reverse design features the classic St George and the dragon design by Benedetto Pistrucci, continuing the long-standing tradition of this image appearing on The Sovereign coin. The obverse displays a crowned portrait of The King in commemoration of his landmark coronation ceremony, exclusively designed by Martin Jennings for The Royal Mint.
The Coronation Sovereign 2023 Collection marks the first time Sovereign coins have featured a crowned effigy of King Charles III. The range includes a variety of Proof editions, including The Sovereign, Double-Sovereign, Half-Sovereign, Quarter-Sovereign and Piedfort Sovereign, alongside a Brilliant Uncirculated Five-Sovereign Piece.
