Founded in 1896 as a branch to the British Royal Mint, Perth Mint today is one of the largest minting plants globally, owned by the Western Australian government. First issued in 1990, the Australian Kookaburra is a sought-after coin series featuring annual designs of one of our most iconic birds. Famed for its raucous laughing call, the kookaburra is heard across the nation – from the outback to the back yard. The coin depicts two kookaburras perched on the branches of a shrub displaying the flowers of Australian native waratah. Instead of traditional raised relief, the artistry is incused, meaning it is pressed into the surface of the blank to a depth that’s inversely related to the high relief format. The reverse also includes the inscription ‘KOOKABURRA’, The Perth Mint’s ‘P’ mintmark, and the coin’s weight, purity and 2023 year-date. This coin portrays the official Queen Elizabeth II Memorial Obverse, featuring the Jody Clark effigy supplemented with the dates of Her Majesty’s reign – ‘1952 – 2022’.
