This coin design for 2022 commemorates The Heidelberg School of painters who worked together at artists’ camps around Melbourne and Sydney in the 1880s and 1890s who as a group created a style that is known today as Australian impressionism. This design shows the ever-present icon of the bush, the eternal Kangaroo, looking over its shoulder while impressions of Australia’s distinct landscape form a backdrop for the amazing one-year-only design. The emphasis on form, clarity, and composition is achieved through suggestions of landscape—a key approach of the Australian Impressionist Movement.
