Double-weight Sovereign from a limited presentation of 2,022. These special edition piedfort Sovereigns are part of a unique memorial collection from The Royal Mint, celebrating the legacy of Her Majesty the Queen who passed away in September 2022, just months after celebrating her Platinum Jubilee. Our longest-reigning monarch has been a feature of British coinage for the last seventy years but for these memorial coins we find her beloved portrait replaced by the image of her son who will be crowned as King Charles III in 2023. The new royal coinage portrait is the work of British sculptor Martin Jennings. These memorial Sovereigns are among the first UK coins to feature Jennings design which shows His Majesty facing left. This is paired with a one-off reverse design that perfectly captures this historic moment of transition. It’s similar in theme to Timothy Noad’s Platinum Jubilee motif but stylistically distinct, embodying this new reign. The design is the work of Jody Clark - known for his portrait of Queen Elizabeth - and it’s rich with detail, featuring a realistic lion and unicorn as supporters, either side of a shield of royal arms with a crowned helmet above. Every spare millimetre of this intricate design is filled with flourishes and national flower emblems. Piedfort Sovereigns are a recent innovation, offering the historic appeal of these prestigious Royal Mint coins, combined with an enhanced with twice the standard gold content of a ‘full’ Sovereign.
