Phil Lewis, the artist behind this incredible design, believes “living in harmony with the earth is the path to kindness, strength, respect, and prosperity.” No animal embodies this idea more beautifully than the magnificent Bison. The bison’s gentle and trusting spirit represents a deep connection to the earth, as well as a gratitude for all the universe provides. Unfortunately, history has shown that mankind’s relationship with the bison has not always been so harmonious. At first, Native Americans lived peacefully alongside these great animals, using every part of the bison for food, clothing, shelter, tools, jewelry and in ceremonies. However, when the first European settlers arrived, they decimated the bison population through unsustainable hunting practices and habitat destruction. Thankfully, through recent efforts in conservation and sustainability, the bison populations across North America are making a comeback.
The obverse of this one-ounce silver Bison coin displays the portrait of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II, designed by Ian Rank Broadley. The Queen looks to the right while wearing her royal tiara and earrings. The background displays a negative image from the front of the bison coin in a stunning Proof finish.
The reverse showcases the fully colorized illustration of the bison, as designed by Phil Lewis. The bison’s brown fur smoothly mixes with the vibrant hues of orange, yellow, and purple patterns. The bison’s horns feature red zigzag shapes over a repeating curved pattern.
