The Kookaburra is Australia's most famous bird. A member of the kingfisher family, it generally doesn’t like to fish! Instead, it preys on invertebrates and some small vertebrates. The word Kookaburra comes from the Wiradjuri word “guuguubarra”. The word resembles the famous laughing call of the Kookaburra. Kookaburras laughter is iconic as an Australian morning wake up call. The joyous laughter alerts to a majestic sunrise and beautiful day ahead.
Beginning in 1990, and now the longest running bullion program by the Perth Mint, the Kookaburra coin program sees a new artistic design every year. The Kookaburra is Australia's most well-known native bird species, so its no surprise this coin is a top-seller every year.
The design of the reverse side features a kookaburra flying with the wings outstretched under a full moon. Lettering: 'AUSTRALIAN KOOKABURRA', the year-made, purity and weight of the coin. The disign of this native Australian bird changes every year.
The obverse of the coin depicts the effigy of Her Magesty Queen Elizabeth II along with the denomination.
