Founded in 1896 as a branch to the British Royal Mint, Perth Mint today is one of the largest minting plants globally, owned by the Western Australian government. The Australian Gold Nugget is perhaps the most iconic Australian Gold Bullion coin. Starting from 1986 a new design has been produced every year, and the Australian Kangaroo being introduced to the design in 1989. Since then, the Gold Nugget has often been referred to as the Gold Kangaroo. The Australian Gold Kangaroo is one of the few legal tender gold coins worldwide that features a new design every year.

The obverse of the coin features the Jody Clark effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. The reverse portrays a kangaroo crouched on a grassy hillock. Including the inscription ‘AUSTRALIAN KANGAROO’, the reverse incorporates The Perth Mint’s ‘P’ mintmark as well as the coin’s weight, purity and 2019 year-date.
