The South African mint launched the Krugerrand in 1967 to market South African gold, accounting for almost 80% of global gold sales by 1980. In 2017 a 999.9% silver version was introduced to mark the Krugerrand’s 50th anniversary.
The Gold Krugerrand is the first gold bullion coin in the world and amongst the most popular. The Krugerrand is the original gold coin introduced in 1967 by the South African Mint for investors to preserve their wealth.
The coin is made from “crown gold,” a durable 22k (.9167) fine gold and copper alloy used in English gold sovereigns. The alloy gives the Krugerrand superior durability and a rich colour not seen in higher purity coins. The small amount of copper makes the coin resistant to denting and scratching, helping the Krugerrand maintain a brand-new appearance.
As the legal tender of South Africa, the coin does not need to be melted down upon release, making it easily tradable and widely accepted around the world. The unique Krugerrand has no face value and its value is determined by the international market gold price.
The Krugerrand’s name comes from Paul Kruger, the former South African Republic’s last president. On the reverse of the coin is a springbok antelope, a lively emblem of South Africa that represents national pride.
The Gold Krugerrand’s worldwide popularity and recognition makes it one of the best bullion coins to collect and invest in.
