Founded in 1896 as a branch to the British Royal Mint, Perth Mint today is one of the largest minting plants globally, owned by the Western Australian government. This coin is from the third year of issue for the popular Australian Nugget gold coin series, which has morphed into the Kangaroo series of gold coins.
The 1988 gold Nugget was the first bullion issue of the series. When originally introduced, the Nugget series featured images of famous gold nuggets found in Australia. The 1 oz coins had the "Welcome Stranger" nugget, which was the largest alluvial gold nugget ever found.
The reverse of the coin features a representation of the tradicional Australian Nugget, surrounded by stylised rays of sunlight. Bordered by the inscription "THE AUSTRALIAN NUGGET", the year-made, the weight and its purity.
The obverse features the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and the monetary denomination.
